Managed MongoDB 8.0.11

Create a document database from the dashboard and get the host, a port unique to that database, and certificates ready to use. Connections require TLS with a client certificate, and collections, indexes and documents open right in the dashboard — no connection string in hand required.

How it started

MongoDB was built for scale and flexibility

Dwight Merriman, Eliot Horowitz, and Kevin Ryan turned a practical problem in ad systems into a new way to model data.

The pain of scale

At DoubleClick, the founders encountered relational database limits while serving more than 400,000 ads per second.

2007: 10gen begins

They founded 10gen to build a more flexible, scalable data platform with open development.

2009: MongoDB arrives

The database launched with a document-oriented model, designed for unstructured data and fast-changing applications.

What comes with a MongoDB here

None of this is something you configure: it is the default behavior of every MongoDB created on the platform.

Mandatory TLS, client certificate

The instance refuses cleartext connections. The CA, server certificate and client certificate are generated at creation time and stay available for download in the dashboard or through the API — there is no manual issuing step.

Collections and documents in the panel

The Data tab lists collections and indexes and opens documents in pages of 200, with document edits up to 1 MB. Operations that run code on the server ($where, $function and $accumulator) are rejected.

Lifecycle in a button

Start, stop, restart, reset the password and reset the certificates without opening a ticket. Resetting the database exists too, kept apart and flagged as destructive — it wipes the data.

Snapshots with download and restore

Manual snapshots of the database volume, restore from any earlier snapshot (with a 30-second cooldown) and download of the contents as a ZIP. Available from the Scale plan up.

What fits well in documents

MongoDB fits where the record changes shape over time and a fixed schema gets in the way more than it helps.

Content and catalogs

A post, a page, a product, a record: each document carries only the fields it needs, and a new field does not require a table migration. A per-collection index handles everyday lookups.

Per-server bot configuration

One document per guild with the prefix, channels and enabled modules. It is the most common shape for Discord bots hosted here, and the Data tab is how you check a specific server without writing a script.

User profiles and preferences

A profile with nested blocks — addresses, integrations, flags — read whole in a single query instead of spread across five tables behind joins.

Application events and telemetry

Event records arrive with a variable shape and are stored as they come. Pair it with a Node or Python application on the same platform, connected over the internal host with TLS.

Connection details

The host follows the format id-without-hyphens.db.usa1.vertraweb.app and the port is unique to each database — both are listed in the credentials tab, along with the user, password and certificates. TLS with a client certificate is mandatory.

Connecting with mongosh

Download certificate.pem from the dashboard: it works as both tlsCAFile and tlsCertificateKeyFile. Keep the password in an environment variable instead of leaving it in your shell history.

bash
mongosh "mongodb://default:$SENHA@<id>.db.usa1.vertraweb.app:<port>/?authSource=admin" --tls --tlsCAFile certificate.pem --tlsCertificateKeyFile certificate.pem

A plan for every stage of the project

Memory and storage change with the plan; the engine does not. Compare the plans and pick the one that fits today.

Frequently asked questions about managed MongoDB

The questions support sees most often, answered short.

How do I connect my application over TLS?

Use a mongodb:// URI with authSource=admin, plus --tls, --tlsCAFile and --tlsCertificateKeyFile pointing at the database's certificate.pem. Without TLS and a client certificate the instance refuses the connection.

Where do I download the certificate?

On the database page in the dashboard, next to the credentials, or through the API. The CA, server certificate and client certificate are generated automatically at creation; if you need to rotate them, use Reset Certificates and download the new ones.

What does the destructive reset erase?

The database contents: collections, documents and indexes go back to the state of a freshly created instance. Restarting erases nothing; Reset is what erases. Take a snapshot before using it.

How do I restore a snapshot?

From the database's snapshots tab, picking the point you want to return to. There is a 30-second cooldown between restores, and the contents can also be downloaded as a ZIP. Manual snapshots are available from the Scale plan up.

Which plan do I need?

You need a plan with enough free RAM to allocate to the database. This MongoDB instance requires at least 1,024 MB, and the number of databases on paid plans depends on available memory, not a fixed quota. Free ("suspended") allows 1 app + 1 database, but the Free plan's RAM is still pending definition. To browse collections and documents through the Data tab, the database owner's plan must be Intermediary or higher.

Pick the RAM, wait for the instance to come up and connect with the certificates downloaded from the dashboard. No server to install, no certificate to issue by hand.
